Italy will develop technology to kill cancer cells using super rays

Release date: 2010-03-01

According to a recent report by the Italian "Late Post" website, Italy's first national tumor particle treatment center was recently completed in Pavia.

The report said that at this treatment center, doctors can inject invisible rays into the DNA and kill the cancer cells directly. The particle beam produced by the synchrotron can directly treat patients lying in the operating room and can "make a miracle" to 5% of inoperable tumors or anti-radiation-treated cancers by subatomic particle beams.

According to Sandro Rossi, technical director of the National Cancer Particle Therapy Center in Italy, the synchrotron device provided by the Italian Nuclear Physics Laboratory "is a particle accelerator that produces carbon particles and protons. The initial velocity of these particles is 3 per second. Ten thousand kilometers, according to the depth of the tumor in the patient's body, through the accelerator to accelerate to the speed required for treatment." Thereafter, the particle beam is introduced into the treatment room. In the treatment room there is a magnet weighing 150 tons that is used to bend the particle beam by 90 degrees to illuminate the patient from top to bottom. Each treatment time is 2 to 3 minutes, and an average of one treatment requires more than ten exposures.

Robert Orrezia, Scientific Director of the National Cancer Particle Therapy Center, said: "This treatment does not completely replace traditional radiation therapy, it is just a more diverse treatment." Particle therapy is effective against some of the more difficult tumor conditions, such as sarcoma, central nervous system tumors, head and neck tumors, melanoma, and so-called non-small cell lung cancer or liver malignancies.

Today, 50,000 patients in the world receive proton therapy, and 6,000 patients receive satisfactory results after receiving carbon particle therapy. Another feature of particle therapy is that particles deep into the patient's body effectively "destroy" the tumor while leaving healthy body tissue unaffected.

The National Cancer Particle Therapy Center in Italy is the fourth similar treatment center in the world after Chiba, Hyogo and Heidelberg in Germany. It is currently in trial operation and will gradually be transferred to daily operation after October next year. The annual reception volume is about 3,000 patients.
